Take Home Point #15: Point of Caution on Watching Certain OSCE Case Videos

· YouTube videos,Exam Tips and Advice,Canada,Study,NAC OSCE Exam

IMGs are increasingly using mock OSCE case videos on YouTube as a study aid in preparation for their upcoming NAC-OSCE. While the videos may help convey the correct pace and affect of a typical medical school OSCE exam, it is important to note that in most instances these scenarios do not accurately reflect typical NAC-OSCE cases. The content of many mock OSCE case videos simply do not showcase complex scenarios that were specifically written and developed for assessing internationally educated medical graduates (fully licensed physicians).

Further, many of the mock OSCE scenarios are conducted in unrealistically longer or shorter sequences of time thereby giving a false impression of station timing. The NAC-OSCE itself offers only two case durations: 8-minutes stations and 11-minutes stations.

Lastly, the bulk of the mock OSCE case videos available online portray basic OSCE cases for Med 1 to Med 4 evaluations. So, as a point of caution: carefully scrutinize the source of the videos (Has it been produced by a reputable, accredited organization?) and view scenarios from at least Med 4 level OSCEs when using videos as a study tool in preparation for the NAC-OSCE.
